Position Overview:
The Director of Development leads the organization’s fundraising strategy and execution to ensure sustainable revenue growth that advances our mission. This position on the leadership team is responsible for cultivating and stewarding relationships with individual donors, corporations, foundations, board members, and community partners while building diversified funding streams. The ideal candidate is strategic, relational, data-driven, and energized by measurable impact. This role requires initiative, confidence in donor engagement, and the ability to translate mission into meaningful investment opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Growth:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive Annual Development Plan with clear fundraising goals, timelines, and performance metrics.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual major donors, including the management of a portfolio of 30-40 major donors and prospects.
- Expand corporate sponsorships and foundation funding through targeted outreach.
- Lead all aspects of the grant lifecycle: prospect research, proposal development, submission, reporting, and relationship management.
- Plan and oversee fundraising events and campaigns to drive revenue growth and donor retention.
- Track performance metrics, analyze revenue trends, and adjust strategy to meet or exceed goals.
Donor Relations & Stewardship:
- Build long-term relationships with donors through personalized communication and engagement strategies.
- Develop structured stewardship and recognition systems.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to support high-level donor cultivation and solicitation efforts.
Collaboration & Community Engagement:
- Work collaboratively with the Strategic Partnerships pillar team, staff, volunteers, and consultants to advance funding priorities.
- Represent Brain Injury Solutions at community events, meetings, and speaking engagements.
- Clearly articulate the organization’s mission, impact, and funding priorities to diverse audiences.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Strong understanding of nonprofit fundraising strategy and donor engagement principles.
- Demonstrated success in major gift cultivation and grant writing.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical abilities and comfort working with fundraising data.
- Experience with donor management systems (e.g., Little Green Light) and Microsoft 365.
- Self-directed, goal-oriented, and highly organized.
- Knowledge of brain injury or human services preferred but not required
- Must live within a commutable distance to Roanoke, VA
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Development, Business Administration, Communications, Human Services, or related field required.
- 3+ years of fundraising or donor-facing development experience required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Primarily Roanoke office-based with regular travel throughout the service area.
- Frequent driving of personal vehicle required.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via virtual platforms.
- Prolonged sitting, walking, or standing as duties require.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
